  • Town launches online Council Priorities tracker highlighting Newmarket’s progress

    Created: Tuesday, November 19, 2024

    At yesterday’s Council meeting, the Town of Newmarket launched an innovative digital tool for the community to track the progress of Council’s five priority pillars: Community and Economic Vibrancy, Customer-first Way of Life (enhanced by technology), Extraordinary Places and Spaces, Environmental Sustainability, and Diverse, Welcoming and Inclusive Community.

    "The Council Priorities Tracker is visually appealing, easy to use and navigate and it demonstrates our strong commitment to a customer-first way of life, which is in fact one of our Council priorities,”  says Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. “This is a big step forward in helping our community to track our progress in many different areas and create a stronger understanding of the important work that is happening to continue to make Newmarket an extraordinary place to live and work.”

    In spring 2023, Council adopted the five priorities and accompanying action items to act as a roadmap in ‘Setting the Stage for an Extraordinary Future’ throughout the current term (2022 – 2026). The online flipping book version of the Council Priorities document recently received an Honourable Mention from the International MarCom Awards in the government publications category.

    Now the Town is taking another step forward in accountability, transparency and accessibility by bringing the Council Priorities to life through the new online progress tracker.

    The digital tracker which was created in-house by Town staff, serves as a hub for all of Council's 2022-2026 priorities and the projects underway to achieve them. Featuring engaging visuals, key statistics, milestone trackers, and detailed information on Newmarket's projects and accomplishments, the site effectively tells the story of Newmarket's progress and achievements.

    Highlights of some featured projects and initiatives  include;

    • Opening and enthusiastically programming the Mulock park and house, a community landmark for current and future generations that will feature art works from the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO).

    • Creating a differentiating brand strategy and implementation plan to strengthen the Town’s reputation as a vibrant place to live for entrepreneurs, artists and knowledge workers, building a strong local and innovative economy.

    • Implementing a pilot project to explore the pedestrianization of downtown Newmarket.

    • Exploring the re-development and re-purposing of the former Operations Centre (Timothy Street) into a thriving community hub for innovation, arts and entrepreneurialism.

    • Adding vibrancy to Mulock Drive through the completion of the Mulock Multi-use path.

    • Updating the Community Energy Plan to ensure the Town leads in climate action.

    • Continuing to create more cycling and walking options in the community.

    • Implementing the Action Plan to dismantle anti-Black racism.

    • Continuing the Town’s strong commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion through engagement, education and action resulting in meaningful change.

    • Redesigning and updating the Town website to enhance online services and improve user experiences and create an app to continue to improve communication and access to services.
