Newmarket would like residents to take caution around local bodies of water such as Fairy Lake, the Holland River, and stormwater ponds. Please stay alert around all bodies of water and remind children to not play in the area. The stormwater ponds may look safe, but it's what's below the surface that makes them different from regular ponds. As a result, water flow and water levels can fluctuate quickly without warning. Stay off these ice surfaces as they are not safe for winter activities like skating.
Ponds for stormwater management collect, hold, and treat rainwater. They are not meant for skating. Stormwater ponds are made to stop flooding, reduce erosion, and enhance the quality of the water before it is gradually released back into the closest stream or river. Residents can enjoy skating safely at the following outdoor rinks:
- Mercedes-Benz Newmarket Outdoor Ice Rink (Riverwalk Commons 200 Doug Duncan Drive) open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Lions Park Hockey Rink (424 D'Arcy Street) open Monday to Fridays from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Winter Activities in Parks
The Town of Newmarket encourages residents to enjoy winter safely at designated recreational spaces. Please note that parks are not maintained for winter activities and should be avoided. Use at your own risk.
If you choose to toboggan, please take extra caution and remember to:
- Check the hill. Make sure it is free of hazards (trees, rocks, fences, bumps) and away from roads and rivers
- Avoid ice-covered areas
- Make sure there is room at the bottom of the hill to stop – away from roads, or bodies of water
- Use proper sliding equipment and wear a helmet (ski helmets are recommended)
- Ensure your route is clear before sliding
- Ensure all children are supervised by an adult
- Inspect the toboggan to ensure it is in good condition
